The name literally means “old bakery,” and honestly, that’s exactly what this place feels like – a converted bakery that someone thoughtfully turned into apartments. It’s tucked away in Unterrath, which I’ll be straight with you, isn’t the sexiest neighborhood in Düsseldorf, but that’s actually part of its charm. You’re looking at about a 15-minute ride to the Messe (trade fair grounds) and maybe 20 to the airport, which is probably why you’re considering it anyway.

The apartment itself sits in the Hinterhaus – that’s the back building for non-German speakers – so you’re shielded from whatever street noise Unterrather Straße might throw at you. I mean, it’s not a busy thoroughfare, but still. The space has this quirky, slightly industrial feel that works better than it should. The ceilings are higher than your typical German apartment, and there’s something about the old brick walls that makes you remember this place had a completely different life decades ago. Don’t expect luxury finishes or Instagram-perfect design – this is more about character and functionality. The kitchen is actually well-equipped (I was surprised by the decent coffee maker), and the bed was comfortable enough, though the pillows were a bit soft for my taste.

What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night. Unterrath isn’t exactly party central, so once evening hits, it’s genuinely peaceful. There’s a decent Turkish bakery about a five-minute walk away on Kalkumer Straße – way better than whatever sad breakfast options you’ll find at the airport hotels. Parking was straightforward, which anyone who’s tried to park near Düsseldorf’s center will appreciate. The whole check-in process was smooth, though it’s all done through a key box system, so don’t expect a front desk experience. Look, this isn’t going to wow you with amenities or make you want to extend your trip, but it does what it promises. If you’re in town for business at the Messe or catching an early flight, and you want something with more personality than a sterile chain hotel, the Alte Bäckerei delivers. Just manage your expectations – it’s solid, quirky, and refreshingly unpretentious.

  What could be improved: Ρωτηθηκαμε για την ώρα άφιξης μας και ο ιδιοκτήτης ήρθε μισή ώρα αργότερα από την ώρα που είχαμε δηλώσει ότι θα φτάναμε. Περιμέναμε στο δρόμο χωρίς να μπορούμε να επικοινωνήσουμε μαζί του γιατί τον παίρναμε τηλέφωνο και δεν απαντούσε στις κλήσεις μας.
