Hotel Description
You know what caught me off guard about the Apartment-Hotel am Rathaus? It’s literally sitting on Burgplatz – and I mean literally, like you step out the front door and you’re basically staring at the old town hall. When I first walked up, I was expecting some touristy hotel trying to cash in on the location, but honestly, this place has more character than that.
The thing is, being right in Altstadt means you’re in the thick of everything, but somehow they’ve managed to keep it relatively quiet inside. I mean, you’ll hear some street noise – it’s the old town, not a monastery – but nothing that kept me up at night. The rooms are actually proper apartment-style setups, which is perfect if you’re planning to stay more than a couple nights or if you want to grab some fresh bread from the market (there’s a great little one just a few streets over on Carlsplatz) and actually have somewhere to enjoy it. The kitchenettes aren’t huge, but they’re functional – I managed to make decent coffee every morning, which honestly matters more to me than fancy lobby art.
What I really appreciated was how the staff actually knew the neighborhood. When I asked about getting to the Königsallee for some shopping, the guy at the front desk didn’t just point me toward the tourist route – he told me about cutting through the Hofgarten, which saved me a good ten minutes and was way more pleasant than walking along the main roads. That kind of local insight makes a difference. The whole setup feels more like staying in someone’s well-appointed city apartment than a typical hotel, which works really well if you’re planning to explore Düsseldorf properly rather than just passing through. I’d definitely book it again, especially during the Christmas market season when being able to walk home after wandering around the stalls with a mug of Glühwein is pretty much priceless. The 8.1 rating makes sense – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but it delivers on what actually matters when you’re staying somewhere.

Beautiful apartment in a great location. Considering we stayed during a public holiday we were also offered a great price to stay here. Overall we absolutely recommend these apartments for a stay in Düsseldorf.
What could be improved: Check in took longer than expected, the property manager was not onsite so we had to wait a little for them to get to the property. We were offered a free beverage for our troubles.Great trip enjoying Altbiers! – Brian from United Kingdom – 28 May 2025 (9/10)
The location was excellent and it was perfect for three people to share.
Great accommodation in the heart of the Altstadt – Caren from United Kingdom – 15 May 2025 (9/10)
The location was superb and the beds very comfortable. The apartment was very clean and it was nice to have a balcony.
What could be improved: N/AGreat Stay – Vicki from United Kingdom – 9 December 2024 (8/10)
Location excellent. Hotel was clean, bed comfy and the shower was very good. We could see the Christmas market from our window too which was a bonus. Restaurants, bars and shops right on the doorstep. Journey from airport took 25 minutes and the hotel was a 2 minute walk from the drop off point.
What could be improved: It is quite a trek if you are on the top floor (age is not on our side 😉 )as they don’t have a lift but, this is made clear on the booking and it didn’t hinder our trip in any way. It’s just something to bear in mind if you have difficulty climbing stairs, 67 to our floor. Upon arrival the staff member apologised again that they did not have a lift and advised that the minibar was complimentary for us to enjoy. Very sweet gesture.A lovely hotel in the heart of the Altstadt. – Robert from Netherlands – 9 December 2024 (8/10)
A lady from the adjacent MAKI restaurant came to do the check-in and take the Dusseldorf tourist tax who allowed me to have a slightly later check-out time. The room was very nicely decorated, clean and comfortable. Bed was very comfortable and I had a good sleep. The bathroom was lovely and clean, and there was plenty of hot water for the shower. A hair dryer was provided. A small fridge contained some complementary chocolate bars and soft drinks. The room had a lovely view over the Rathaus square – a perfect location to visit the Christmas Markets, bars and restaurants of the Altstadt. Recommended.
What could be improved: Only two very, very small complaints – the safe in the room had not been reset from a previous guest and so it could not be used, and the shower gel dispenser was not working properly so it was very difficult to get the gel out. For people with difficulty walking or a lot of luggage – be aware that all the rooms are on upper floors and there is no lift. In addition, the location is excellent but parking is a challenge and you will need to park in a public car park and then carry your luggage to the hotel (the hotel is on a pedestrianized street so using a car to drop-off may be difficult). Closest parking garage is the CONTIPARK Altstadt underground (about 200m from the hotel).Superb – Lindsay from United Kingdom – 25 November 2024 (9/10)
Fabulous location in the altstadt. Coffee machine, water and coke included. Very clean
What could be improved: Nothing although it may be a bit noisy for people who go to bed early. However the Christmas Market closes before 10Superb – Gemma from United Kingdom – 1 October 2024 (9/10)
Excellent location, very comfortable, clean and spacious. But it would have been so nice to have some breakfast in the hotel. Otherwise, perfect!
What could be improved: No breakfast is available. There are cafes in the area but they don't open early (except McDonalds).Superb – Gemma from United Kingdom – 28 September 2024 (9/10)
Great location in heart of Altstadt but not noisy
What could be improved: No breakfasts availableGreat location and lovely room – Saartjie from Netherlands – 14 August 2024 (9/10)
Location is perfect and the room was clean and fresh. Decor is lovely and we enjoyed our stay. We will definately stay here again in future.
Well recommended for a night or two to give you a great landing place to explore Altstadt! – Michelle from Switzerland – 9 August 2024 (9/10)
The location was amazing! It was right in the Old Town and the beginning of the City's Kid's Treasure hunt. We didn't even get to see the nearby park as it was too rainy, but we still felt satisfied with our exploration. Know that you need to ask in the sushi restaurant next door to check in. The office staff let us stow our bags there after check out the next morning. We found a delicious breakfast at nearby Carlsplatz Markt and ate it on the balcony, and had a yummy lunch at the sushi/check in restaurant. The apartment itself was very clean. Stairs only. Wifi worked well for us.
What could be improved: Even though we did enjoy our balcony breakfast, the scenery below was into the back of a restaurant/apartment.
