Look, I’ll be straight with you about this place – City-Apartment 65qm isn’t trying to be some fancy hotel, and honestly, that’s exactly why it works so well. It’s basically what it says on the tin: a proper apartment right on Sonnenstrasse in Oberbilk, which I know doesn’t sound glamorous, but hear me out. You’re getting 65 square meters with two actual bedrooms, and I mean proper bedrooms with doors that close, not some studio nonsense where your bed is three feet from the kitchen.

The location is actually pretty smart if you know Düsseldorf at all. Oberbilk has this reputation for being a bit rough around the edges, but that’s mostly outdated – it’s gotten way better over the years, and you’re still close enough to everything that matters. You can walk to the Hauptbahnhof in about fifteen minutes, maybe twenty if you’re dragging luggage, and the tram connections are solid. What I really appreciated though was the parking situation – you know how impossible it is to find a spot in most German cities, right? Well, they’ve actually sorted that out here, which is worth its weight in gold if you’re driving in. The WiFi works properly too, none of that hotel nonsense where you get disconnected every hour and have to re-enter some impossible password.

The apartment itself feels lived-in rather than sterile, if that makes sense. It’s clean (and properly non-smoking, thank god), but it doesn’t have that weird hotel smell or those scratchy sheets that never feel quite right. I mean, it’s not going to win any design awards – we’re talking functional furniture and basic everything – but sometimes that’s exactly what you want. The kitchen actually has real dishes and cookware, not just a kettle and some sad instant coffee packets. Honestly, after staying in so many places where you can’t even open a window properly, having a space where you can spread out and actually relax was pretty refreshing. The noise level is reasonable too; Sonnenstrasse can get a bit busy during the day, but it settles down at night, and with the windows closed you’re fine. For what you’re paying – and given that this is Düsseldorf where hotel prices can be absolutely mental – it’s solid value. Just don’t expect room service or someone to carry your bags, because this is very much a do-it-yourself kind of deal.

  Spacious apartment in a great location for exploring Düsseldorf and beyond. Very close to tram and railway links. Plenty places to eat and drink also in local vicinity. Great host also.

  Bettina was very helpful when our flight and train were delayed. The flat is in a good area with excellent shops and transport facilities around the city.
  The beds are comfortable, the shower works very effectively – this is Germany! – and the kitchen was well resourced. I definitely give it full marks, and I would like to return here to see more of this lovely city. Good value too!

  What could be improved: Das Bad sollte eine richtige Wand zwischen Duschbereich und dem Rest des Raumes haben, damit beim Duschen das Wasser nicht den kompletten Raum nass macht.
