Hotel Description
Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of places in Düsseldorf, and City Apartments Old Town really gets it right in ways that surprised me. You’re literally on Bolkerstraße – which, if you don’t know the area, is this narrow cobblestone street that feels like you’ve stepped back a few centuries. I mean, you can practically reach out your window and touch the buildings across the way. The thing is, most hotels in Altstadt either go full tourist-trap kitschy or they’re so sterile you forget you’re in this incredible historic quarter. These guys found that sweet spot where you feel like you’re actually living in Old Town, not just visiting it.
The apartments themselves are honestly better than I expected for a 4-star place. Mine had this little kitchenette that actually worked – not one of those sad hotel attempts with a broken mini-fridge. The floors creak a bit (it’s a historic building, what do you expect?) but in a charming way, not an “oh god what was that noise at 3am” way. What really sold me was stepping out in the morning and being thirty seconds from Schneider Wibbel – this local brewery that tourists somehow never find – and maybe two minutes from the Rhine promenade. You know how some places claim they’re “in the heart of everything” but you still need to walk fifteen minutes to find decent coffee? Not here. There’s this tiny bakery literally next door where the owner clearly knows everyone in the neighborhood.
The 8.2 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there a few days. It’s not perfect – the Wi-Fi can be spotty on the upper floors, and if you’re expecting a big American-style lobby, well, there basically isn’t one. But honestly, that’s part of what works about it. You’re not staying in some corporate box; you’re in an actual neighborhood where people live and work. I watched the same guy walk his tiny dog past my window every morning at exactly 7:30, and there’s something really lovely about that routine. The staff actually knows the area too – not just the obvious tourist spots but where to find good spätzle at 10pm or which way to walk along the Rhine when it’s crowded with weekend cyclists. If you’re the type who wants to feel like a temporary local rather than a tourist checking boxes, this place delivers in a way that the fancier hotels closer to Königsallee just can’t match.

Reviews
The location was really good and I can recommend the apartment for a staying of not more than 2 days or so. The kitchen – Aragon from Spain – 23 July 2025 (7/10)
The location
What could be improved: The kitchenSuperb – Julius from Lithuania – 9 October 2024 (9/10)
Location is perfect, straight in old town, and quite quite as windows was towards backyard. All rest was good, clean, cozy
What could be improved: Materace is hardProperty is in an excellent location for the bars, not suitable for a family with children due to the noise. – Mark from United Kingdom – 4 July 2024 (8/10)
Location was great for a group of lads.
What could be improved: Room with the bunk beds were on the small side and had no air conditioning, room got stuffy.Superb – Arne from Belgium – 13 May 2025 (9/10)
Ideal accomodation for a group of friends, good beds, good shower, good location
What could be improved: A bit tiny, so you cannot stay too long on the appartment. But that was no issue for us.Very good – Alexander from Belgium – 5 December 2024 (8/10)
Top location,
Exceptional – Ahmed from United Arab Emirates – 25 November 2024 (10/10)
Best location in the old town
Great central location & very clean – Chloet64 from Australia – 4 November 2024 (10/10)
The apartment is located right in the center of the old town. It is close to everything you will need;: the subway, restaurants, cafes, bars, supermarkets (Aldi) and bakeries! They are all just a few minutes walk away. You don't need a car! And it was super clean!
The apartment has a very small kitchen with a fridge, hotplate and crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils. This is really great if you are like us and prefer to self-cater and prepare your own meals.
We did not meet the owner. But they were prompt to answer all of our questions via email.
We picked up the key from a box with a code. It was easy and there was no problems with gaining entry to the building.
We had a really great four day stay with no problems, And would be happy to stay with them again when visiting Dusseldorf.
What could be improved: The only problem we had was that the apartment often became very hot and stuffy. Although it was cool outside we kept the windows open and used the fan for our entire stay. The second room with the two bunk beds (where we stored our suitcases) was like a sauna.
Our stay began on a Sunday and finished on a Wednesday. The first three nights were very quiet. But it got a bit rowdy when the Pub opened on the Wednesday evening. But we just closed the windows which drained out most of the noise. I imagine that it could get very noisy on the weekend!Pleasant – Sofia from Germany – 30 August 2024 (6/10)
Location
What could be improved: It was almost impossible to sleep because of the noice outside. We stayed in summer and without air conditioning it was absolutely impossible to sleep. One room doesn’t have windows what makes it super depressing and in another room there were not proper curtains and you can’t sleep there because of the light from the outside.Good, Decent, Great Location – Sagar from India – 13 December 2024 (6/10)
location was best
What could be improved: collection of key
+
we were 2 colleagues so needed 2 separate room. one room is small + other room is extremely extremely small 🙂
still, its decent . Host is good.
we will stay there againPleasant – Sam from United Kingdom – 24 June 2024 (6/10)
Fantastic location in the middle of the old town. Good for a short stay.
What could be improved: Unfortunately as this was during the European championships the apartment was very loud making it almost impossible to sleep before 2am.
Very small apartment, shower room flooded quickly meaning a shower had to last a maximum of 2 mins.
