Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Fasanenweg 25, I wasn’t expecting much from what’s essentially a basement apartment in Unterrath. But you know what? Sometimes the best finds are the ones that surprise you completely. This little gem tucked away in a residential neighborhood turned out to be exactly what I needed, and that 9.7 rating suddenly made perfect sense.

Sonnwald (which means “sunny forest” – cute, right?) feels more like staying at a thoughtful friend’s place than a typical hotel setup. The souterrain location means you’re ground level but with that cozy, slightly underground vibe that’s actually pretty nice once you settle in. What really got me was how quiet it is – and I mean properly quiet, not that fake hotel quiet where you still hear hallway conversations at midnight. Being tucked into this residential street means the loudest thing you’ll hear is probably someone walking their dog in the morning. The owner clearly knows what travelers actually want because there’s proper kitchen space (not just a mini-fridge and hope), decent Wi-Fi that doesn’t cut out every ten minutes, and honestly, better coffee setup than most four-star places I’ve stayed.

Unterrath isn’t exactly the postcard part of Düsseldorf, but that’s actually what makes it work. You’re living like locals do, walking to the bakery in the morning, figuring out which bus gets you downtown fastest (spoiler: it’s easier than you think). The airport’s close enough that you’re not dealing with that nightmare hour-long journey with luggage, but far enough that you won’t hear planes constantly. I actually found myself enjoying the whole routine – grabbing groceries at the nearby shops, taking the U-Bahn into the Altstadt when I wanted that classic Düsseldorf experience, then coming back to this peaceful little spot to actually relax. The neighborhood has that lived-in feel where people nod hello but don’t bother you, and there’s something really refreshing about that after dealing with touristy areas all day. Sure, it’s not going to win any design awards, and if you’re looking for room service and a concierge, this isn’t your place. But if you want somewhere clean, quiet, and genuine – somewhere you can actually unpack your stuff and feel settled for more than one night – Sonnwald delivers in ways that surprised me.

  Excellent stay! Everything you need was provided. Cold water in the fridge and coffee were cherries on the pie. Open air balcony was great to refresh, especially for smokers. Clean, convenient, and extra helpful landlord.
