Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about Hotel am Hofgarten? It’s tucked away on this quiet residential street in Pempelfort where you’d actually want to take evening walks – not like those hotels that dump you next to highway noise and call it “central.” The building itself has that understated German elegance thing going on, nothing flashy, but when you’re wheeling your suitcase up to the entrance, you get this sense that locals probably nod approvingly at this place rather than rolling their eyes at another tourist trap.

The thing about staying here is you’re genuinely in a neighborhood. I mean, there’s a proper bakery two streets over where people line up for weekend brötchen, and you can walk to Hofgarten park – the actual Hofgarten, not some tiny green patch they named optimistically – in about eight minutes. The staff actually knows the area too, which honestly surprised me after staying at chain places where they hand you a generic city map and shrug. When I asked about getting to the Altstadt without dealing with the main tourist crowds, the guy at reception gave me this specific route through the park that locals use. Small thing, but it mattered.

Look, it’s a solid three-star place, so don’t expect marble bathrooms or turndown chocolates. But the rooms are properly comfortable – good beds, decent shower pressure, and here’s something I appreciated: real blackout curtains that actually block the morning light. The WiFi works throughout the building (tested it in the stairwell because I’m paranoid about these things), and there’s this lived-in feeling to the common areas that makes you want to linger over coffee rather than just pass through. Parking can be a bit of a dance on the street, but they’ll point you toward a garage that’s not outrageously priced. Honestly, for the location and what you get, that 7.6 rating feels about right – it’s the kind of place that does the fundamentals well without trying to be something it’s not. If you want to feel like you’re staying in Düsseldorf rather than just visiting it, and you don’t need a concierge in a bow tie, this works really well.

  • Very good – Mark from United Kingdom – 26 January 2025 (8/10)

  • It is a great hotel – Jeffreya1965 from United States – 27 December 2024 (9/10)

Great location, super friendly staff, beautiful staircase and most importantly I felt like I was in Europe, not some cookie cutter place with knock off pottery barn furniture. I'm tired of bland hotels and this one was memorable for the right reasons.

What could be improved: Nothing. I wished I had stayed longer.

  • Cozy and quiet positive stay – John from Canada – 20 April 2024 (8/10)

The staff was great and the room well designed for efficiency. WiFi was fast and reliable

What could be improved: The price! I realize there was a commercial fair going on but it was so expensive, I decided to not stay two nights in favor of a very long train ride and a long day

  • Serious Value for Money and Great Location – David from Ireland – 1 March 2024 (9/10)

This double room with en-suite was just perfect for a business trip. The cost was really good and the bed was super comfortable. The bathroom was ideal and the power from the shower was really powerful, with immediate hot water.
Marcel greeted us at reception and was super friendly and chilled out. Not something I find most German's are…
But it was not just him, all the staff wore big smiles and eager to help.
Train was a stone's throw away and the old city was a 15 minute walk.
I will certainly return to this hotel for any future trips to Dusseldorf.
And I hope Marcel did well in his Chess Competition.

  • Superb – David from United Kingdom – 5 September 2023 (9/10)

It was good value, and between my meeting venue and the town.

  • our stay in hotel am Hofgarten would rate as one of our best city stays. small and friendly and in an ideal location. – Neil from United Kingdom – 13 May 2023 (9/10)

the hotel is very central and ideal for seeing all the sights. the breakfast room although in the basement is a lovely bright room and the breakfasts excellent. our room was very comfortable.

all the staff without exception were so friendly and attentive.
we were also given on arrival a Dusseldorf travel card which entitled us to free public transport in the city for the duration of our stay. we found this invaluable for reaching the further reaches of the city.

What could be improved: perhaps the stairway and landings could do with a little bit of revitalising.

  • Very good – Anja from Germany – 6 July 2025 (8/10)

Very clean, friendly. Great location. Good breakfast.
