Hotel Description

You know what surprised me most about Hotel National? It’s tucked away on this quiet residential street in Pempelfort, but somehow it feels like you’ve found this little secret that most tourists completely miss. I mean, when you’re walking down Schwerinstrasse, you’d almost walk right past it if you weren’t looking – it’s got this understated entrance that doesn’t scream “hotel,” which honestly turned out to be part of its charm.

The whole place has this relaxed, unpretentious vibe that’s refreshing after dealing with those overly polished chain hotels. The lobby’s compact but welcoming, and the staff actually seem to know the neighborhood – they pointed me toward this fantastic bakery just two blocks over that I never would’ve found otherwise. My room was clean and comfortable, nothing fancy but everything worked properly (you’d be amazed how rare that is sometimes). The shower had proper water pressure, the bed was firm enough that I didn’t wake up with a backache, and there’s decent soundproofing considering you’re in the middle of a city. Though I will say, if you’re a super light sleeper, maybe pack earplugs – there’s the occasional tram that rumbles by in the early morning, but it’s more ambient city noise than anything disruptive.

What really sold me on this place was the location situation. Pempelfort isn’t where most tourists end up, but that’s actually brilliant because you get to see how Düsseldorf actually lives. There’s a proper grocery store within walking distance, a few local restaurants that serve real German food (not the touristy stuff), and you can catch the U-Bahn easily to get into the old town or the shopping districts. I found myself walking to the Rhine promenade in about fifteen minutes, which became my evening routine. The area feels safe even at night, lots of families and professionals living nearby. Parking was surprisingly manageable too – they’ve got a small lot, and street parking isn’t the nightmare you’d expect. For a 3-star place, they punch above their weight in terms of service and comfort. The housekeeping was thorough, breakfast was simple but fresh (proper German bread, decent coffee), and check-in was smooth even when I arrived later than expected. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re staying somewhere real rather than in some generic hotel bubble, if that makes sense.

To book a hotel in Dusseldorf during the famous Rhine in Flames festival season, visitors should make reservations well in advance as the city attracts fashion enthusiasts and business travelers from around the world.

Reviews

  • Very good – Jmoloney from Germany – 3 August 2025 (8/10)

A very central location. The staff were very friendly. A quiet room despite being on the road. A few bars directly opposite offering a selection of local beers. A few meters from Nordstr. with lots more bars and restaurants. The breakfast was cooked locally and big selection of homemade jams.

What could be improved: All good. We only needed 1 night and the hotel fulfilled all our needs.

  • Lovely people, great location. – John&ann from United Kingdom – 22 July 2025 (10/10)

Fantastically warm welcome – lady on reception even remembered we had booked two years ago, even though Covid intervened. Excellent carpark at very cheap cost (50% of what we paid elsewhere in Germany) and our reserved space even had our name on the wall! Staff are all lovely – helpful, cheerful and helpful with any language difficulties. Very good breakfast selection served in comfortable and spacious room. Lift and walk-in shower helped we 'oldies'. Small but nice balcony to room. Excellent location so near city centre with good transport nearby. Lots of choice of restaurants within easy walking distance.

    What could be improved: Nothing.

  • Very comfortable and pleasant stay – Pam from United Kingdom – 25 June 2025 (10/10)

Lovely room with a balcony which was spotlessly clean. Bed was very comfortable and powerful shower. Staff were amazing and very helpful. Excellent breakfast with plenty of variety to suit everyone’s taste. We reserved a parking space in the secure garage and our space was clearly marked with our name when we arrived. Quiet area with a choice of eating establishments close by. We would definitely stay here again.

What could be improved: There are no negatives from our perspective

  • In the Pempelfort neighborhood of Dusseldorf – Shannon from United States – 24 June 2025 (10/10)

We were traveling by bicycle and the hotel meets the needs of cyclists. They have secure garage parking for bikes.

The rooms were very spacious and each room had a fan (which was needed during the heatwave since there is no air conditioning).

The breakfast was outstanding. Lots of fresh fruit along with bread, cereal, yogurt, eggs, meat and cheese. Gluten-free bread was available on request.

There are excellent restaurants within walking distance in all directions from the hotel. Public transportation is two blocks away.

    We had a wonderful stay.

  • Most enjoyable short stay – Christina from United Kingdom – 15 June 2025 (10/10)
