Hotel Description
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Messe HV-1 on Reiherweg, I wasn’t expecting much. It’s tucked away in Unterrath, which honestly feels more like a quiet residential neighborhood than where you’d expect to find a hotel. But you know what? That turned out to be exactly what made it work.
The building itself is pretty straightforward – classic German functionality without any pretense. Check-in was refreshingly quick (the desk clerk actually remembered my name the next morning, which was nice), and my room on the third floor had this surprisingly decent view over the residential streets. Nothing fancy, but clean lines and everything you actually need. The bed was firm in that way German hotels seem to master, and I slept better than I expected considering I could hear the occasional car on Reiherweg. It’s not exactly a busy street, but sound does carry through the windows if you’re a light sleeper.
Here’s the thing about staying in Unterrath – you’re actually in a pretty sweet spot if you know how to work it. The Unterrath S-Bahn station is maybe a 10-minute walk, and from there you’re in Düsseldorf’s center in about 15 minutes. Way better than dealing with the chaos around the Hauptbahnhof area, and honestly, the morning commute with locals heading to work gave me a better feel for the city than any tourist zone would. There’s a decent bakery just down from the hotel where I grabbed coffee and pastries – proper German breakfast stuff, not hotel continental nonsense. The staff there doesn’t speak much English, but pointing works just fine and their Apfelstrudel was legitimately good.
What surprised me most was how quiet the evenings were. I mean, you’re still in a major city, but Unterrath has this residential calm that kicks in after dinner time. Perfect if you’ve spent the day walking around the Altstadt or dealing with trade show crowds (which, let’s face it, is probably why a lot of people end up at a place called “Messe HV-1”). The hotel itself doesn’t try to be a destination – no fancy restaurant or rooftop bar – but the front desk guy pointed me toward a local Gasthaus about five minutes away that served proper schnitzel and local beer. Sometimes that low-key approach works better than hotels trying too hard to impress you.
I’d say this place hits its marks for what it is – a solid 3-star that doesn’t oversell itself. The 7.4 rating makes sense; it’s not going to wow anyone, but it won’t disappoint either. Parking was actually available on the street (free after 6 PM), which saved me the usual hotel garage fees. If you’re looking for Instagram-worthy luxury, keep looking. But if you want a clean, quiet base for exploring Düsseldorf without paying city center prices, and you don’t mind a short train ride to the action, this little spot in Unterrath does the job quite well.
Early hotels booking in Dusseldorf is essential during major events like the Fashion Week, as accommodations fill up quickly with visitors eager to experience the city’s renowned shopping scene and Japanese cultural quarter.

Reviews
Family weekend visit – Meghan from United States – 24 June 2024 (8/10)
Having a private bathroom and 2 bedrooms, access to a full kitchen and living room, access to washing machine. Nice quiet residential area, within reasonable walking distance to multiple bus stops and tram stop.
What could be improved: There wasn't a good way to dry clothes after washing–a clothes drying rack would have been really helpful. The floor of the shower seems too flat to drain properly, so the whole bathroom floor gets wet. The code lock system was a bit difficult to use, and we had to be very careful to not get locked out of our room.Very good – Vaidas from Lithuania – 18 April 2024 (8/10)
All was more or less ok
What could be improved: I found someone's socks on the radiator in the bedroom 🙁Good apartment with city center connection – Alen from Switzerland – 16 June 2024 (7/10)
– Nice rooms and clean apartment, nice garden
– Near a bus stop to the city center
What could be improved: – House entry code issues (that were resolved), but the host wasn't on spot in our case
– We would've liked extra trash bags in the rooms.非常好 – Yu from China – 21 April 2025 (10/10)
