You know what caught me off guard about My Sweet Home City? The name actually makes sense once you’re there – it really does feel more like crashing at a friend’s well-organized apartment than staying at a typical hotel. I’ll be honest, when I first pulled up to Kölner Straße 140 in Oberbilk, I wasn’t expecting much from this corner of Düsseldorf. The neighborhood’s got that authentic, slightly gritty residential vibe that most tourists never see, but honestly? That’s part of what made it interesting.

The building itself is pretty straightforward – no fancy marble lobby or anything like that – but the moment you step inside, there’s this surprisingly warm, homey atmosphere. The staff actually remembers your name after day one (rare these days), and check-in was refreshingly quick without all the upselling nonsense you get at chain places. My room was clean and comfortable, nothing fancy but thoughtfully put together. The bed was actually really good – I mean, I’m picky about mattresses and slept great every night. What I appreciated most were the little touches that showed someone was thinking: decent lighting for reading, enough outlets near the bed, and a bathroom that didn’t make you feel like you were in a submarine.

Here’s the thing about staying in Oberbilk – you’re about a 15-minute tram ride from the Altstadt, which means you skip the tourist hotel prices but still get easy access to everything. The Kölner Straße area has some solid local spots; there’s this Turkish bakery two blocks down that does incredible börek in the mornings, and honestly better coffee than what you’ll find in the old town. Parking was surprisingly manageable too, which anyone who’s driven in German cities will appreciate. The neighborhood gets pretty quiet after 9 PM, so don’t expect nightlife right outside your door, but for sleeping? Perfect. I noticed some construction happening a few streets over during my stay, but it didn’t start until reasonable hours and wasn’t disruptive.

What really sold me on this place was how genuine everything felt. The 8.2 rating makes total sense – it’s not trying to be something it’s not, just doing the basics really well at a fair price. You’ll meet other travelers who actually chose to stay here rather than just ending up here, if you know what I mean. Would I stay again? Absolutely, especially if I’m in Düsseldorf for more than just the typical tourist checklist.

  Wir waren zu einem Geburtstagsfest in Düsseldorf geladen und haben die Unterkunft mit 4 Erwachsenen für eine kurze Nacht genutzt.
  Der Vermieter war überaus freundlich. Schlüsselübergabe hat toll geklappt.

  Хороший хост – забыл очки в апартаментах и хост их выслал мне с помощью DHL по моему адресу. За это ему отдельное спасибо.
  Бесплатная парковка под домом.
  Рядом станция метро.

  Закрыт VPN в интернете – не очень понятно как в условиях удаленной работы подключаться к рабочей сети.

  Gastgeber ist freundlich, antwortet schnell und wir durften direkt nach der Ankunft in die Wohnung.
  
  What could be improved: Es roch unangenehm, duschen nur im Sitzen möglich und sehr sehr dreckiger Boden. Meine Socken habe ich nach dem Aufenthalt direkt entsorgt, da die Wäsche nichts mehr retten würde.
  Wir haben uns sehr unwohl und unhygienisch gefühlt.
  Sind daher sehr früh morgens abgereist.
