Hotel Description
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Privatzimmer Schönfelder on Lakronstr. – I mean, it’s tucked away in Gerresheim, which most tourists skip entirely on their way to Düsseldorf’s flashier districts. But you know what? That turned out to be exactly why this place works so well.
The Schönfelders run this guesthouse like they actually care about who’s staying there, which sounds obvious but really isn’t these days. When I arrived (a bit late because I got turned around near the S-Bahn station), Frau Schönfelder was still waiting up to show me around personally. The rooms are clean in that particularly German way – everything has its place, the floors gleam, and there’s this subtle scent of lavender that I’m pretty sure comes from whatever they use on the linens. It’s a proper family-run operation, so don’t expect marble lobbies or those weird automated check-in kiosks. What you get instead is someone who knows exactly which bus gets you to the Altstadt fastest (the 735, by the way) and where to grab decent coffee before 7 AM.
Gerresheim itself is one of those neighborhoods that feels authentically Düsseldorf without trying too hard. You’re about 15 minutes from the city center, but honestly, I found myself hanging around the local area more than I expected. There’s a solid bakery just down the street where the locals queue up for weekend brötchen, and the whole district has this lived-in feel that’s way more relaxing than staying right in the thick of Königsallee’s shopping chaos. The street itself is residential and quiet – I’m a light sleeper and never had issues with noise, even with the windows cracked open. Parking was straightforward too, which anyone who’s driven in German cities will appreciate.
What really struck me about this place is how it hits that sweet spot between being affordable and actually comfortable. The WiFi works properly, the shower has decent pressure, and there are those small touches that show someone’s paying attention – like having a proper mirror with good lighting and enough outlets near the bed for your devices. I mean, it’s not fancy, but it’s thoughtful. The 9.5 rating makes complete sense once you realize you’re getting genuine hospitality instead of corporate efficiency. Plus, the S-Bahn connection means you can be in the heart of Düsseldorf or even hop over to Cologne without much fuss. If you’re the type who’d rather spend money on a good dinner than an overpriced hotel room with a minibar you’ll never use, this is your spot.
Early hotels booking in Dusseldorf is essential during major events like the Fashion Week, as accommodations fill up quickly with visitors eager to experience the city’s renowned shopping scene and Japanese cultural quarter.

Reviews
Comfy and cozy stay in this beautiful city – Choong from United Kingdom – 17 June 2025 (10/10)
The room was neat, clean, air-conditioned, and tastefully decorated with artworks and lamps. The host welcomed me and saw me off—one of the nicest people I’ve met.
What could be improved: If I had to be nitpicky, I’d say the pillow was a bit flat, and the water heating took some time to respond each time I adjusted it.Perfect stay if your neighbors are quiet. – Patrick from Germany – 12 June 2025 (9/10)
Absolutely great rooms in a House at a quiet neighborhood. Rooms are modern, Bathroom is very big and the beds are comfy. Contact with the host was extremely pleasant.
What could be improved: The House itself is of old design, taking the stairs to your room will be your daily workout. While everything has been renovated, Doors are very old and thin so you hear if someone is being loud.Exceptional – Tiskute from Lithuania – 2 April 2025 (10/10)
All was very good!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Exceptional – Антон from United States – 21 February 2025 (10/10)
Excellent host. Very supportive.
What could be improved: Parking – hard to find placebnear the house, but still I was able to find the place in nearby streetVery happy with our stay and would definitely stay there again if Peter would have us. – Andrea from United Kingdom – 14 December 2024 (9/10)
The info I had was spot on and Peter always replied promptly. He was an attentive host who had our interests at heart. The fresh coffee which was free was an added bonus and the kitchen was fully stocked and super clean.
What could be improved: Check in could have been earlier. Most places offer check in by 3pm which would have been very helpful. I know Peter said it is sometimes possible, but as check out is at 10.30 I think 5pm is a little late.Lovely place and very private. – James from Germany – 24 November 2024 (9/10)
God location
What could be improved: When it rained the last night I could not sleep as it was so loud on the skylight. No one’s fault but not good for light sleepers.Elegant Stay – Hulya from Bulgaria – 11 October 2024 (10/10)
Quite and cosy pleace which is almost 100 years old.
What could be improved: Nothingabsolutely loved it! – Veronika from Czech Republic – 16 September 2024 (10/10)
I loved absolutely everything! I did have high expectations, but they were exceeded!
The neighbourhood is absolutely amazing – beautiful, quiet, green, safe.
The building is very nice and clean too.
The apartment is spacious enough, also has enough storage space, has all the amenities you may need, is very clean and modern and has a very comfy and cozy bed.
The shared kittchen has all you need and is very clean too.
On top of all this, the host is super nice, friendly, helpful, professional.
I would love to stay again!
What could be improved: NOTHING!Peter is a true gentleman of a host and couldn’t recommend more highly! – Abe from Australia – 20 June 2024 (10/10)
Gorgeous, affluent suburb of Düsseldorf surrounded by nature. The room itself had tasteful, contemporary decor and an incredible bathroom. Loved it.
What could be improved: The particular room I was staying in could have had a fan as I was on the fourth attic floor and it gets hot, but the lower levels would be fine. Outside of that absolutely nothing. If you're in Düsseldorf, you MUST consider staying here! – Caio from Brazil – 28 March 2024 (10/10)
I never give "tens". To anything. I believe a "ten" is the standard perfection of a given scale, therefore it doesn't exist in reality.
Well, that's until I found Privatzimmer Schönfelder. It's a ten. Let's dive into why.
1. Mr. Schönfelder is really nice and helpful. He was incredible – a person that I want to stay friends with for the rest of my life. 2. The bedroom is gorgeous. And it's big. And it's a king-sized bed. And the pillows are awesome. 3. The BEST bathroom in Europe, I can GUARANTEE you that. 4. It was sparkling clean. Even my germophobic wife was feeling comfortable. 5. There's free high-quality coffee, a very nice kitchen with a small fridge, oven, stove, dishwasher, and some seasoning herbs. 6. Very good washing machine/dryer/soap for 5 euros. This is important in long trips: a clean washing machine will change your mood. 7. Everything looks beautiful, the Privatzimmer is carefully decorated with gorgeous architecture. 8. Super close to many good restaurants, grocery stores, and the tram line. 5-min walk tops. We went to four restaurants in the region: I Duo Amici (excellent! – Italian), Schumacher (excellent! – German), T-Bar (excellent! – bar), and Da Giacomo (recommendation – excellent! – Italian). I'm NOT the kind of person who says that everything is excellent, believe me.
So… great place.
If you're in Düsseldorf, you MUST consider staying here!
What could be improved: Stairs. But hey! They're good for your cardio (and mine!). No, but really, it was a very nice stay and we have zero complaints.
