Hotel Description
You know what caught me off guard about TMJ Apartment 1? The name makes it sound like some corporate housing block, but honestly, it’s got more personality than that suggests. Tucked away on Kölner Straße in Oberbilk, this three-star spot sits in one of those Düsseldorf neighborhoods that locals actually live in – not the polished tourist zones you’ll find near the Altstadt.
The thing about staying here is you’re genuinely in a residential area, which means you’ll hear real life happening around you. Morning coffee runs to the bakery down the street, kids heading to school, that sort of authentic backdrop that makes you feel less like a tourist. I mean, Oberbilk isn’t going to wow anyone with Instagram-worthy architecture, but there’s something refreshing about being where actual Düsseldorfers go about their daily routines. You’re still only a short tram ride from the fancy shopping on Königsallee or the brewery scene in the old town, but when you come back at night, you’re not fighting crowds of other visitors for sidewalk space.
The apartment itself – and it really does feel more like an apartment than a hotel room – hits that sweet spot of being comfortable without trying too hard. The 7.8 rating makes sense because, well, it delivers exactly what it promises without any surprises (good or bad). The kitchen setup actually works if you want to grab groceries from the Rewe around the corner instead of eating out every meal, which honestly saved me quite a bit during a longer stay. Check-in was straightforward, though I’d recommend confirming the exact process beforehand since it’s not your typical hotel lobby situation. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle on this street – typical for German residential areas where spaces are precious – but there are options nearby if you’re driving. The soundproofing is decent enough that street noise wasn’t an issue, though you might hear your neighbors if they’re particularly enthusiastic about their evening conversations. What I really appreciated was how the space felt lived-in rather than sterile. Sure, it’s not luxury, but it’s got that comfortable, unpretentious vibe that makes you want to actually relax rather than worry about messing up the perfect hotel aesthetic. For the price point and location, it’s one of those places that works especially well if you’re planning to spend your days exploring the city rather than lounging around your accommodation.

The place is nice, even though it's not big. Its near the tram that will bring you fast to the central station.
What could be improved: The hosts didn't respond to queries. They said we can come at 13:00, then we found an unclean place, and only after 15:00 did the cleaners come. The TV didn't work, and they didn't respond. Something was broken in the bath, and they didn't respond, rtc.Disappointing – Naveen from Germany – 25 October 2024 (4/10)
