You know what surprised me most about the Tolstov Apartments? How quiet it actually gets at night, even though you’re technically still in Düsseldorf. I mean, Rath isn’t exactly the postcard part of the city, but that’s honestly what makes this place work so well. Am Gatherhof feels more like a residential neighborhood where actual people live – you’ll see families walking to the local bakery in the morning and kids riding bikes after school, which gives you this authentic German experience that most hotel districts completely lack.

The apartments themselves are pretty much exactly what you’d expect from a solid 3-star setup, but with way more space than you’d get in a traditional hotel room. I’m talking about actual 3-room layouts with proper kitchens where you can make real meals, not just reheat leftovers. The balconies aren’t huge, but they’re perfect for morning coffee – and honestly, there’s something satisfying about hanging your laundry out there like the locals do. The furniture is that practical IKEA-style stuff that doesn’t win design awards but actually functions well for longer stays. One thing I really appreciated was how straightforward everything felt – the WiFi works without drama, the heating responds when you adjust it, and the shower has decent pressure (you’d be surprised how often that’s not the case in apartment rentals).

What really sells this place, though, is that 15-minute connection to Messe Düsseldorf – and they’re not exaggerating about the timing. I actually tested it during rush hour, and even then it was maybe 18 minutes door-to-door. If you’re coming for a trade show or conference, you’ll save a fortune compared to those overpriced hotels right near the fairgrounds, plus you get to decompress somewhere that doesn’t feel like a business district. The public transport connections are genuinely solid too – the S-Bahn gets you into the city center without any fuss, though I’d recommend grabbing a day pass since individual tickets add up quickly. There’s also decent parking if you’re driving, which isn’t something you can take for granted in this part of Germany. Look, it’s not going to be the most Instagram-worthy spot you’ve ever stayed, but sometimes you just want a place that works well without any pretense – and that’s exactly what you get here.
