You know what? When I first pulled up to this place on Breisacher Straße, I’ll be honest – I wasn’t expecting much from the name “Zimmer nahe Messe und Flughafen.” It basically translates to “rooms near the trade fair and airport,” which sounds about as exciting as watching paint dry. But honestly, sometimes the most straightforward places surprise you the most. This ground-floor spot in Unterrath turned out to be exactly what I needed, and I mean that in the best possible way.

The thing about staying in Unterrath is that you’re actually in a pretty sweet spot that most tourists completely miss. Sure, it’s not the flashy Altstadt with all the brewery tours, but you’re maybe fifteen minutes by S-Bahn to the center, and – here’s the kicker – you can actually get to Messe Düsseldorf without wanting to tear your hair out. I stayed here during a trade show (yeah, I know, riveting stuff), and while my colleagues were dealing with insane traffic from their fancy downtown hotels, I was practically strolling to the convention center. The airport connection is legit too – you’re not stuck in some industrial wasteland, but you can hear the occasional plane if you’re the type who gets bothered by that sort of thing.

What really got me was how the place just… works. The room was clean in that German way where everything has its place, the Wi-Fi didn’t cut out every five minutes (looking at you, every hotel in Paris), and the owner actually seemed to care about whether guests were comfortable. I mean, it’s not going to win any design awards – we’re talking functional furniture and neutral colors – but sometimes you just want a place where the shower has decent water pressure and the bed doesn’t feel like a medieval torture device. The breakfast was simple but fresh, and there’s this little Turkish place around the corner on Kalkumer Straße that does incredible döner if you’re tired of hotel food. Actually, the whole neighborhood has this lived-in feel that I really liked – real bakeries, actual grocery stores, people walking their dogs instead of posing for Instagram photos. It’s Düsseldorf without the pretense, which honestly felt pretty refreshing after spending days at trade shows talking about synergy and paradigm shifts.

To book a hotel in Dusseldorf during the famous Rhine in Flames festival season, visitors should make reservations well in advance as the city attracts fashion enthusiasts and business travelers from around the world.

  Nice clean separate basic room on a ground floor of private house, good for short stays. Clean bed linen, enough towels, hair dryer is there. No fridge or kitchen utensils, if you count on – but for me was not the problem. The owner was friendly, understanding and caring, we met only at the beginning for keys takeover. Owner is easily reachable in case of any needs. Also as a nice bonus to have materials about the city and places to visit. Separate keys and entrance so you’re totally independent. Super close to airport, public transport, supermarkets are not so far.
  
  What could be improved: The walls are a bit thin, so you hear a bit what is behind, but nothing critical – can be important for some visitors.
  
  The only discomfort was that it was cold in the room, as I visited in Mar, but owner said temperature could have been corrected if I’d say him. Anyways, the blanket was so cosy and warm, so at night this didn’t bother me.
