Hotel Description
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Zum armen Mann on Alte Flughafenstraße, I wasn’t expecting much. The name literally means “The Poor Man” in German, which had me wondering what I’d gotten myself into. But you know what? Sometimes the most unassuming places surprise you the most.
This little 3-star gem sits right in Lohausen, and here’s the thing everyone should know – you’re basically a stone’s throw from Düsseldorf Airport without actually being in one of those soulless airport hotels. I mean, yes, you’ll hear the occasional plane if you’re really listening, but it’s not the constant roar you’d expect. The family running this place has been at it for years, and it shows in all the right ways. The rooms aren’t Instagram-perfect, but they’re genuinely comfortable with these thick duvets that make you want to sleep in (which I definitely did). The breakfast spread is actually impressive for a place this size – proper German bread, local cheeses, and coffee that doesn’t taste like it came from a machine that’s seen better days.
What really sold me on this place, though, is how it sits in the neighborhood. You’ve got the S-Bahn literally around the corner, so getting into central Düsseldorf takes maybe 15 minutes – way easier than fighting traffic or paying ridiculous taxi fares from the airport hotels. There’s this little Turkish bakery just down the street that opens ridiculously early (perfect if you’re dealing with jet lag), and honestly, their börek is better than anything I found in the city center. The owner – I think his name was Klaus – gave me the most detailed directions to the Altstadt I’ve ever received, complete with warnings about which U-Bahn stops to avoid during rush hour. That’s the kind of local knowledge you just don’t get at chain hotels.
The parking situation is refreshingly straightforward (free, and you don’t have to play Tetris with your car), and check-in was handled by someone who actually seemed happy to see guests arrive. Sure, the Wi-Fi gets a bit sluggish in the evenings when everyone’s streaming, and the shower pressure could use some enthusiasm, but for the price point and the genuine hospitality, these feel like minor quibbles. If you’re flying in or out of Düsseldorf and want something more authentic than those sterile airport properties, this place delivers on comfort without pretense. Just don’t expect marble lobbies or concierge services – expect a solid night’s sleep and people who actually care about making your stay work.

Superb – Alexandr from Czech Republic – 5 September 2024 (9/10)
Good location if you are going to the exhibitions – which was my case, also close to the airport, public transport, some restaurants …
What could be improved: Even though I expected it, taking off or landing planes may bother some people …Very good – Sigita from Lithuania – 23 July 2024 (8/10)
Very good location, near airport and 20 min by feet to Mercury Arena. Basic, but very clean, in the nice street with trees.
What could be improved: The planes take off direct over the hotel, so it is very noisy. If you would like to sleep longer, you should have ear plugs.Comfortable, simple, and friendly 🙂 – Robert from Canada – 23 June 2024 (9/10)
Wasn't sure what to expect coming to stay for 1 night for the Euros, but was really pleasantly surprised by my stay at Zum armen Mann. Nicely furnished for the size (even made space for a smart TV in compact room), quiet at night, comfortable, a spacious bathroom and shower (it is "external" from the room, but completely private with simple lock & key), and friendly staff working there. Everything was quick and fuss free, from check-in, to a personal breakfast set up specially in the morning. Much appreciated! Would definitely recommend to single travellers stopping by in Düsseldorf.

Friendly staff, close to airport, extremely affordable, great facilities and good vibe downstairs as it is above a pub (generally older people)
What could be improved: Airport means planes overhead but you can close windows. Bed could have been better as I am a heavy personGood – Kathrin from United Kingdom – 17 May 2025 (7/10)
Convenience of location. Easy to reach. Staff nice. Room clean. Lovely new bathroom.
What could be improved: Bed a bit too soft for me.
