You know what caught me off guard about the Alte Bäckerei? The name literally means “old bakery,” and when you walk into this converted building on Unterrather Straße, you actually get it – there’s something warm and homey about the place that feels nothing like your typical airport hotel. I mean, you’re maybe ten minutes from Düsseldorf Airport, which honestly makes this spot a lifesaver if you’ve got early flights, but it doesn’t feel rushed or sterile like most airport accommodations do.

The location in Unterrath is pretty smart, actually. Most people think they need to stay right in the city center, but this little neighborhood gives you easy access to both the airport and the Messe (convention center) without the tourist crowds. The U-Bahn connections are solid – you can get into Altstadt or the main shopping areas without much hassle, though I’d grab a day pass since you’ll probably want to explore beyond just this residential area. Parking was surprisingly stress-free, which anyone who’s driven around German cities will appreciate. The building itself has this quirky charm – you can tell it’s been thoughtfully converted rather than just slapped together. The rooms aren’t huge (this is Germany, after all), but they’re well-designed with decent soundproofing, which matters since you’re not far from flight paths.

What really impressed me was how the staff seemed to actually know the area – they pointed me toward a great Turkish place just a few blocks down that I never would’ve found otherwise, and gave me realistic timing for getting to the Messe in the morning (spoiler: it’s quicker than you think). The whole operation feels family-run rather than corporate, and honestly, the 9-point rating makes sense when you factor in the value. Sure, it’s not luxury – the bathroom fixtures are basic, and don’t expect a fancy lobby – but everything works well and feels clean and maintained. The breakfast was better than expected, though if you’re rushing to catch a 7 AM flight, you might want to grab something at the airport instead since they don’t start serving super early. I’d definitely book this again, especially for business trips to the Messe or when I need airport convenience without airport prices.

  – great location close to Messe Düsseldorf (10 min by car even with a traffic) and on the same side good connection by tram to the city centre
