You know what caught me off guard about Hotel Fährhaus km734? The name sounds like some kind of shipping waypoint – which, honestly, it sort of is. This place sits right on the Volmerswerther Deich, and I mean literally right on the Rhine embankment. When I first pulled up, I wasn’t sure if I’d booked a hotel or accidentally found some maritime office, but then you walk inside and it all makes sense. The whole building has this converted ferry house vibe (fährhaus literally means ferry house, so there you go), and the lobby actually feels cozy rather than trying too hard to be fancy.

The location is what really makes this place work, though most people probably don’t realize it when they’re booking. Sure, you’re technically in Düsseldorf, but Volmerswerth feels like its own little pocket – quieter than the city center, with actual parking spaces that don’t cost a fortune. I could walk along the Rhine path for miles without hitting tourist crowds, and there’s something really satisfying about watching the river traffic from the hotel windows. The breakfast room overlooks the water, and honestly, starting your morning watching cargo boats drift by beats staring at another building any day. What surprised me was how easy it was to get into central Düsseldorf when I wanted to – there’s decent public transport, but I actually enjoyed the 15-minute drive along the river road.

Look, this isn’t going to win any design awards, and the rooms are solidly functional rather than Instagram-worthy, but everything works the way it should. The staff actually knows the neighborhood (they steered me toward a great little restaurant on Benrather Straße that I never would’ve found otherwise), and there’s none of that awkward over-servicing you get at fancier places. The 7.7 rating feels about right – it’s not perfect, but it does what it promises without any nasty surprises. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if I wanted to experience Düsseldorf without feeling like I’m in the middle of a business conference the whole time. Plus, and this might sound weird, but there’s something oddly relaxing about falling asleep to the occasional sound of river traffic instead of car horns and sirens.

  Friendly small hotel with good evening meals and breakfasts in countryside overlooking the Rhine. Just a ten minute walk to access the efficient integrated Dusseldorf public transport network.
