Hotel National Düsseldorf (Superior) Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Hotel National Düsseldorf (Superior), you immediately get the sense that this three-star property punches above its weight. The building has that classic German hotel charm — nothing flashy, but everything feels solid and well-maintained. I mean, when you see the same guests returning again and again (which happens here more than most places), you know they’re doing something right. The entrance feels welcoming without trying too hard, and honestly, that sets the tone for the entire experience.

Location & Neighborhood

Here’s the thing about Pempelfort — it’s one of those Düsseldorf neighborhoods that locals love but tourists often overlook. You’re perfectly positioned between the old town charm and the modern business district, which means you can walk to the Rhine promenade in about ten minutes or catch the U-Bahn to anywhere else in the city without hassle. Couples especially seem to appreciate this spot (they rate the location 9.1, which is pretty impressive), and I get why — it’s quiet enough for romantic evening strolls but close enough to everything that matters. The tree-lined streets around Schwerinstrasse have that authentic German residential feel that you just can’t get staying right in the tourist center.

The Rooms

The rooms at Hotel National Düsseldorf (Superior) are what I’d call thoughtfully designed rather than flashy. You’ll find everything you actually need without unnecessary frills — comfortable beds, decent-sized bathrooms, and windows that actually open (something I always appreciate in German hotels). The “Superior” in the name isn’t just marketing speak; the rooms feel a step up from your typical three-star setup. What struck me most was how quiet everything is, even though you’re in the city — apparently they’ve invested in proper soundproofing, which makes all the difference when you’re trying to sleep.

Breakfast & Dining

The breakfast buffet here is honestly one of the better ones I’ve encountered at this price point. They’ve clearly put thought into accommodating different dietary needs — you’ll find continental classics alongside vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options that don’t feel like afterthoughts. The coffee is proper German strong, and they usually have a good selection of local breads and cold cuts. It’s served in a bright dining room that gets morning light, which sounds like a small detail but actually makes the whole experience more pleasant. You know what I really appreciated? They don’t rush you out, so you can actually enjoy your morning instead of feeling like you’re on a breakfast assembly line.

Why Guests Love It

What keeps people coming back to this hotel is the combination of reliability and genuine hospitality. The staff seems to remember returning guests, there’s private parking (which is gold in Düsseldorf), and the location gives you that perfect balance of local authenticity and tourist accessibility. It’s not trying to be something it’s not — just a well-run, comfortable hotel that delivers on its promises. For the price point and the consistently high ratings, Hotel National Düsseldorf (Superior) represents exactly what you want from a city hotel: no surprises, just solid comfort in a great neighborhood.

To book a hotel in Dusseldorf during the famous Rhine in Flames festival season, visitors should make reservations well in advance as the city attracts fashion enthusiasts and business travelers from around the world.

Reviews of Hotel National Düsseldorf (Superior)

  • Very good – Jmoloney from Germany – 3 August 2025 (8/10)

A very central location. The staff were very friendly. A quiet room despite being on the road. A few bars directly opposite offering a selection of local beers. A few meters from Nordstr. with lots more bars and restaurants. The breakfast was cooked locally and big selection of homemade jams.

What could be improved: All good. We only needed 1 night and the hotel fulfilled all our needs.

  • Lovely people, great location. – John&ann from United Kingdom – 22 July 2025 (10/10)

Fantastically warm welcome – lady on reception even remembered we had booked two years ago, even though Covid intervened. Excellent carpark at very cheap cost (50% of what we paid elsewhere in Germany) and our reserved space even had our name on the wall! Staff are all lovely – helpful, cheerful and helpful with any language difficulties. Very good breakfast selection served in comfortable and spacious room. Lift and walk-in shower helped we 'oldies'. Small but nice balcony to room. Excellent location so near city centre with good transport nearby. Lots of choice of restaurants within easy walking distance.

    What could be improved: Nothing.

  • Very comfortable and pleasant stay – Pam from United Kingdom – 25 June 2025 (10/10)

Lovely room with a balcony which was spotlessly clean. Bed was very comfortable and powerful shower. Staff were amazing and very helpful. Excellent breakfast with plenty of variety to suit everyone’s taste. We reserved a parking space in the secure garage and our space was clearly marked with our name when we arrived. Quiet area with a choice of eating establishments close by. We would definitely stay here again.

What could be improved: There are no negatives from our perspective

  • In the Pempelfort neighborhood of Dusseldorf – Shannon from United States – 24 June 2025 (10/10)

We were traveling by bicycle and the hotel meets the needs of cyclists. They have secure garage parking for bikes.

The rooms were very spacious and each room had a fan (which was needed during the heatwave since there is no air conditioning).

The breakfast was outstanding. Lots of fresh fruit along with bread, cereal, yogurt, eggs, meat and cheese. Gluten-free bread was available on request.

There are excellent restaurants within walking distance in all directions from the hotel. Public transportation is two blocks away.

    We had a wonderful stay.

  • Most enjoyable short stay – Christina from United Kingdom – 15 June 2025 (10/10)
