Hotel Description
You know what caught me off guard about Hotel Am Volksgarten? It’s actually way more charming than you’d expect from a 3-star place tucked into Oberbilk. I mean, let’s be honest – Oberbilk isn’t exactly the postcard part of Düsseldorf, but that’s precisely why this little spot works so well. The moment you walk into the lobby, there’s this understated warmth that feels more like a well-kept secret than a tourist trap. The staff genuinely seemed to remember guests’ names (or at least they’re really good at pretending), and check-in was refreshingly quick – none of that corporate rigmarole you get at the big chains.
The location is honestly pretty brilliant once you figure it out. Sure, you’re not stumbling out your front door onto Königsallee, but Flügelstraße is this quiet residential street that gives you a real taste of how locals actually live. The Volksgarten – which, despite the hotel’s name, is actually a decent walk away – becomes this lovely evening destination when you want to decompress from all the sightseeing. What I really appreciated was being able to hop on the S-Bahn at Oberbilk station (literally five minutes on foot) and be in the Altstadt in under ten minutes. Plus, there’s this fantastic Turkish bakery just around the corner on Kölner Straße that does these incredible börek pastries – honestly better than most hotel breakfasts I’ve had.
The rooms themselves are… well, they’re exactly what you’d want from a solid 3-star: clean, comfortable beds that don’t creak when you roll over, decent water pressure in surprisingly modern bathrooms, and – this matters more than people think – proper blackout curtains that actually block the morning light. The décor won’t win any design awards, but it’s got this unpretentious functionality that just works. I stayed during a busy trade fair season (you know how Düsseldorf gets during Drupa and those massive industrial shows), and while the breakfast room was packed, the staff kept everything running smoothly. The neighborhood stays pretty quiet at night too, which is more than I can say for some of the supposedly fancier places near the Hauptbahnhof where you’re dealing with constant tram noise and weekend party crowds. For the price point – and especially considering that 8.1 rating reflects actual guest experiences, not marketing fluff – Hotel Am Volksgarten delivers exactly what it promises: a genuine, no-nonsense base for exploring Düsseldorf without the tourist markup.

What could be improved: Parking in the area is very difficult I managed to park a 5 minute walk away but I think I was lucky to find this spaceRude staff – Rosarodgam from Colombia – 4 August 2024 (7/10)
The location was a bit far from center but close to public transport system. The Room and the building is pretty well decorated. Fully equipped has everything u need.
What could be improved: The staff wasn't there a lot it was self check in wich worked out pretty well. However, at the checkout time, the receptionist was extremely rude. They don't allow u to stay on the property in the lobby or backyard in my case my flight was at nigth. So that is something I expected from every property.Very pleasent stay. – Nigel from Netherlands – 23 July 2024 (9/10)

What could be improved: Nothing really. I found the hotel nice.Clean and essential – Francesca from Italy – 14 May 2023 (8/10)
Very clean, in the room you will find everything you need
What could be improved: A bit far if you want to reach the city center walking (it took me 40 minutes ti get to the rathaus), and there is no possibility to leave your baggage before check-inreally well priced super property, simple but very functional – Ian from United Kingdom – 2 March 2023 (8/10)
clean and tidy and suited my needs
cozy and convenient – Elisaveta from Germany – 27 February 2023 (7/10)
It’s pretty central and in a very quiet street. The check in system was super easy.
What could be improved: The walls are REALLY thin. You can hear everyone walking and talking as if they’re right next to you. Although it’s a quiet area, it’s not so quiet once someone is moving around the hotel. In addition, the room itself was super small.
